The Painted Closet

In the early seventeenth century, Lady Anne Drury of Suffolk painted a collection of small, allegorical pictures, which she housed in a specially designed closet. These painted panels served as objects of meditation. This series re-works Lady Anne’s project.

 

Like her, I worked in solitude (in both projects, the term ‘closet’ alludes to personal, secret stuff). Specifically, these works draw on themes explored in television series Dark. Dark is a German-made Netflix series that aired in the UK 2017 – 2020. Its themes centred on time (recurrence, repetition, inversion) and generational inter-relationships. A certain density dominates the series: a similar weight hangs over these works.
